FOREWORD
Dear Colleagues
It is my pleasure to make the introduction of this book that contains
selected papers presented during the 9th World Congress of Endoscopic
Surgery which took place in Cancun, Mexico, the week of February 2-7,
2004.
The World Congress, the main event of IFSES (The International
Federation of Societies of Endoscopic Surgery) is organized every two
years, and this time we, the Latin American Surgeons, were charged with
the task and I am proud to inform you that thanks to the generous
support from the industry, we were able to invite a distinguished
Faculty of 328 Speakers and had a total attendance of more than 2500
surgeons from 61 countries, who participated in this revolutionary field
of minimally invasive surgery.
For the first time in the History of IFSES, our Organizing Committee was
able to waive registration fees for 800 young surgeons from many areas
of the world who were thus able to learn the latest advances of
endoscopic surgery.
My sincere thanks to the Organizing Committee, faculty and Medimond for
putting together this volume.

IN
MEMORIAM DR. KURT SEMM (1927-2003)
This 9th World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery is dedicated to the memory
of Dr. Kurt Karl Stephan Semm, one of the most prominent figures and a
true pioneer of Endoscopic Surgery, who died at the age of 75 on July
16, 2003 at his home in Tucson, Arizona.
Dr. Semm was born in Munich, Germany on March 23, 1927, where he studied
medicine and then specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He worked
initially at the Frauenklinik Universitaet in Munich and was later
Professor and Director of the Klinikum Christian Albreachts Universitaet
in Kiel.
Dr. Semm was a great innovator and in the early 60’s started his long
and productive work in “pelviscopy” developing numerous instruments,
among them the automatic laparoinsuflator, trocars and fórceps. In 1974
he introduced the extracorporeal knot, opening the field to many
therapeutic interventions, since laparoscopy was then limited to
diagnostic procedures. His unprecedented impact in endoscopic surgical
techniques included all types of gynaecologic interventions from
resection of ovarian cysts, tumors, tubal pregnancies, lysis of
adhesions laparoscopic intracorporeal suturing to laparoscopic
hysterectomies.
In 1955 he founded the German Society of Fertility and Sterility. Like
many individuals who were born ahead of his times, he faced strong
opposition from members of his profession who were critical of his work
on laparoscopic surgery. He was called a “lunatic” and was asked to seek
consultation in a mental institution because he was doing and promoting
“crazy things”.
In 1981 he was the first to perform a laparoscopic appendectomy and this
resulted in a threat of expulsion from the German Society of Gynecology.
His paper on the subject was rejected by the American Journal of
Obstetrics and Gynecology.
With the passing of time, his work in laparoscopy was widely recognized
and he received honors from many surgical organizations from all over
the world. He was an enthusiastic teacher who travelled to numerous
countries to demonstrate his techniques. A prolific writer he published
several books and more than 1000 scientific papers.
Dr. Semm was an avid pilot and liked to fly his airplane to visit
friends and to lecture. He enjoyed company, good life and a good wine.
With his death, the world of Surgical Endoscopy has lost one of its most
important and enthusiastic champions. May he rest in peace.
